Founded in July of 2015 Horton Built Environments Consulting (HBEC) has enjoyed a variety of projects. Active projects include:

Additions and Renovations to Clayton Homes Headquarters – LEED NC v2009

  • LEED Consultant to Johnson Architecture with Silver Certification anticipated.  The project is currently under review.

CMS Services – LEED for Existing Building re-certification
• HBEC project re-certifying Clayton Homes Office with an original LEED EB v.2 utilizing the new LEED ARC (LEED Dynamic Plaque) certification platform. The Project achieved a Silver certification with 58 points and is one of the first in Tennessee.

Midlab Inc. – LEED EB O+M v2009
• HBEC was brought into the project to assist in correcting issues identified by certification reviewers on the initial submittal for certification.

Rockwood Electric Utility – LEED NC v2009
• LEED consultant to McCarty Holsaple McCarty with Gold certification targeted.

Holston River Retreat
•HBEC project master planning a multi-phase project on 14-acre site on Holston River for permaculture farm and family retreat. Phase 1 design of a Net-Zero Residence is underway.

Rolison Residence
•HBEC project to design an energy efficient country house.

Gibbs Middle School
•Energy Consultant to McCarty Holsaple McCarty for design and construction of a new Knox County middle school.  Provided review of design and construction documents for compliance with the Owners energy requirements.

B & T Distributing Warehouse Expansion
•HBEC consulting with Blankenship & Partners to develop construction documents for the expansion.

200 Block Commons
•HBEC is providing LEED Administration and Energy Modeling for two 100 year old structures listed on the National Register for Historical Places in Joplin, Missouri.  The structures are registered for LEED CS certification with an anticipated certification level of Gold.  The first structure, 212 Joplin Avenue will be submitted for review by November 2017.

Greensville County Power Station – Administration Building
•HBEC is providing LEED Administration for the Administration Building for a combined-cycle generating station in Emporia, Virginia.  The building will be certified as LEED BC+D v. 4

Oak Ridge National Laboratory – LEED Re-certificaitons
•HBEC is working with the ORNL Facilities Staff to define a process for recertification of the 10 previously certified structures by utilizing the LEED ARC platform.  Building 5200 is the first building being re-certified.  Procedures and data collection methodologies established of this building will serve as the model for the ARC re-certifications for other building on the ORNL campus.  The 12 month performance period for certification will begin October 1, 2017.

Don Horton has been providing sustainable solutions throughout his professional career. Prior to founding HBEC, as Sustainability Coordinator with McCarty Holsaple McCarty, Don developed sustainability requirements for all projects and was LEED projector administrator for all LEED registered projects:

John Duncan Federal Building – Knoxville, Tennessee
•LEED for Existing Buildings v.2.0 – Certified in 2007 as the first LEED Existing Building Certification in the South East.

Clayton Homes – Alcoa, Tennessee
•LEED for Existing Buildings v.2.0 – Certified in 2009.

Kingsport Higher EducationCenter – Kingsport, Tennessee
•LEED New Construction and Major Renovations v.2.2 – Silver Certification in 2009.

Building 1059 – Oak Ridge National Laboratory
•Existing Building Operations & Maintenance, 2008 – Gold Certification in 2010 as the first Gold. •Existing Building Certification in Tennessee.

James Quillen U. S. Court House – Greenville, Tennessee
•LEED EB O+M v2009 – Silver Certification in 2012.

American Water Heater – Johnson City, Tennessee
•LEED EB O+M v2009 v2009 – Silver Certification in 2011.

Knoxville Central Station Transit Facility -Knoxville, Tennessee
•LEED NC v.2.2 – Silver Certification in 2012.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters – Knoxville,Tennessee
•LEED CI v2009 – Certified in 2013.

TVA Bellefonte Nuclear Operations and Service Building – Hollywood, Alabama
•LEED CI v2009 – Certified in 2013 – Certification documentation prepared and submittal for certification held at request of the owner.

Regional Medical Services – Newport, Tennessee
•LEED NC v2009 – Certification under review.

Chestnut Ridge Maintenance Shops – Oak Ridge National Laboratory
•LEED NC v2009 – Gold Certification in 2015.

Hallsdale-Powell Utility District Administration and Operations buildings and site.
•2013 Green Project Award by East Tennessee Chapter of USGBC.

•Designed to comply with LEED NC v2009 Guidelines.
